The ATS Motorsport rally team is ready for action in the second round of the South African National Rally Championship – the York Rally. Proceedings get underway in Sabie, Mpumalanga, on Friday April 21 with the action all taking place around the quaint logging and timber industry town, sleepy White River, picturesque Graskop and down the road in the provincial capital, Nelspruit.
By the end of Saturday, finishers will have completed 205 stage kilometres, split into 14 Special Stages. This makes it the longest event on the calendar.
The ATS Motorsport crew of Richard Leeke and Henry Kohne have worked hard since KZN’s opening round – where the finished in an excellent second place – and feel they’re ready for the top step of the podium in the Ford Fiesta R2, which runs in the S1600 class, the top category of local rallying since 2017.
“We’ve taken a hard and critical look at what we did and didn’t do in the sugar cane, and we’re confident there’s more speed to come,” declared Leeke. “We’ve worked on the car a bit and optimised it for the rougher roads we’re expecting and Henry and I have also fine-tuned the way we interact. To win, everything needs to be optimised!”
The event is also a round of the FIA African Rally Championship, which will make a strong result here even more satisfying, added Leeke. A highlight of the event is always the Super Special – where cars start side by side, unlike conventional stages – through the streets of Nelspruit. It is great opportunity to please the crowd and give sponsors added value.
“The York is a great rally in every sense: brilliant stages, excellent spectating opportunities and well-run. We’re ready for it and hope to put on a good show for our sponsors and the spectators!” concluded Leeke.
