Friday’s World Motor Sport Council meeting in Geneva revealed that the governing body expects to have a “detailed project” complete in time for the July WMSC meeting. The FIA also said that it wants to find a promoter for the series “as soon as possible,” so it will be launching a call for expression of interest.
“The WMSC has approved the creation of a new FIA F2 championship, aimed at bridging the gap between F3 and F1 and completing the single-seater ladder,” said an FIA statement.
The plan for a revived F2 series came to light in January, when it was included with top billing on the FIA’s new F1 superlicense points system. The project will be one of the top responsibilities of new FIA Single-Seater Commission president, ex-Ferrari F1 boss Stefano Domenicali.
The Commission’s Frederic Bertrand told AUTOSPORT in January: “What we want to do is create a top-level category, to follow on from F3 and train drivers for F1. We will use the same recipe [that was used for European F3 and new F4], with the involvement of teams and support from them and the media.”
