Todt dreams the dream

FIA president Jean Todt wants the World Rally Championship to make his dreams come true again.Todt has challenged those in direct charge of the WRC to come up with a 10-year vision for the sport – and he wants the cars to adorn bedroom walls around the world.

“You need to dream in front of a car,” said Todt. “If I see a Group B car, I dream. But they are museum pieces now. I am not sure that the actual [current] car will be a museum pieces… Clearly we needed to have cars where you dream more in front of them. It’s going in the right direction, but now we need to know do we need more power? What do we need? A proposal has been done and accepted, but this is in the package of what we need for the future. But safety cannot be compromised.”

Todt added that, while he’s happy with progress the WRC is making right now, he wants a clearer vision of what’s coming further down the line.

He said: “We are sometimes taken too much by the day-by-day, what we do tomorrow. What we need to do is to have a good vision. This is something I am asking for. I want to see how we have the vision for rallying within the next 10 years. I’m very happy of the way things are moving, but I am more concerned what is the next 10 years.”

Todt, who finished runner up in the 1981 world championship while co-driving Guy Frequelin, remains a big fan of globalising the WRC.

He added: “If we go back decades, we only had rallies in Europe. But the world is changing; China was not the number one car market, now they are and we have to take this into consideration. This vision will allow us to speak about the cars, to speak about the events, to speak about the format of the events, something we need to think very carefully about now to be ready for the future of rallying.”
