Red Bull GRC Stars Complete RallyX On Ice Season

Red Bull Global Rallycross stars Patrik Sandell and Austin Dyne finished the 2016 RallyX On Ice season on Friday with an event in Åre, Sweden. Both drivers showed excellent pace once again, wrapping up the four-race 2016 calendar that saw stops in both Sweden and Norway.

Dyne, who skipped the season opener in Piteå, looked to make it to the semifinals for the second weekend in a row. Unfortunately, contact with another driver in the second of three heats derailed his day; a pair of third place finishes weren’t enough to get him to one of the two semifinals.

“I’ve raced in a lot of unique places but this one here in Åre is pretty rad with a ski resort in the background,” Dyne said. “We progressed a ton these three races. It was a frustrating day, but a day in a racecar still isn’t that bad.”

Sandell, on the other hand, may have had an even more heartbreaking result. The Swedish driver, from nearby Östersund, came into his home race with plenty of momentum from a podium in Sälen last week. A runner-up finish in his first heat, followed by wins in the next two, gave him the top starting spot in his semifinal. But after a semifinal victory, a mechanical issue prevented him from starting the final.

“We had a great day leaving everyone in the pow, winning heats and the semifinal,” a disappointed Sandell said after the race. “But unfortunately, I had a car problem so I couldn’t make it to the start of the final.”

Kevin Eriksson was the highest-finishing Red Bull GRC alumnus in the race, as the 2014 GRC Lites runner-up finished second overall. His 40 points were enough to take the series championship from fellow Lites alum Alexander Westlund, who missed the main event and fell to third overall in the points table.
