12:51 Alonso is battling well
Fernando Alonso has been rather efficient on this 6th stage. The Spaniard is only 4 minutes behind Stéphane Peterhansel after 265 km of the special!
12:36 Peterhansel regains the lead
Stéphane Peterhansel is not letting himself be pushed around and the Frenchman has regained the lead over Carlos Sainz after 265 km, by 22 seconds. Nasser Al-Attiyah is still close behind, trailing by just 52 seconds.

11:53 Sainz moves into the lead
We are once again witnessing a splendid battle between the 3 leading drivers on the Dakar. Carlos Sainz has now taken the lead after 213 km, just 2 seconds ahead of Stéphane Peterhansel and 21 seconds in front of Nasser Al-Attiyah!
11:39 Patton rolls his car
The fifth stage has only lasted 4 kilometres for Texan Bobby Patton. The co-owner of the Los Angeles base-ball team has crashed and rolled his Toyota, leaving his co-pilot with back and torso injuries, meaning it is the end of the road on his first Dakar.

It looks like being another terrible day for Jakub Przygonski, who again has mechanical problems with his Mini. The Polish driver looks set to lose one and a half hours on repairs!

Mathieu Serradori seems to be appreciating the dunes at the start of the special. After 107 km, the Frenchman is only 52 seconds behind the leading drivers!
10:40 Peterhansel maintains the pace
Stéphane Peterhansel continues to lead the special after 107 km, ahead of Nasser Al-Attiyah, Yazeed Al Rajhi and Carlos Sainz, though the gaps between the four men are minimal.

Stéphane Peterhansel has made the best time after 57 km. The Mini driver leads Nasser Al-Attiyah by 20 seconds, whilst Yazeed Al Rajhi and Carlos Sainz are also less than one minute behind, so there is all to play for…

Carlos Sainz is the first to get to grips with the special in the car category. After a fine performance yesterday, the general standings leader will be driving under pressure from Nasser Al-Attiyah and Stéphane Peterhansel, who will be on the hunt for him… Three experienced drivers battling for just one title.

The change of scenery is dramatic. This time, the special stage is 100% sand and entirely off-piste. After a relatively fast first section, experts at surmounting obstacles will have an advantage in the dunes. Drivers who have previously honed their driving skills in the Sahara Desert will certainly have the upper hand. Then, it will be time to rest.
