After an eight-week break more than 30 Comsol VW Challenge competitors will be back in the driver’s seat when the fifth round of the 2015 championship gets underway at Zwartkops on Saturday, 8 August 2015. Overall championship leader Nic Clarke (Central Technical Services Polo) bagged a full house of points last time out at Aldo Scribante and now has a 12 point lead over Rory Atkinson (Comsol Polo). Zander Roos (Nathan’s Motorsport Polo), who had mixed fortunes in Port Elizabeth, is a further four points further back in third.
Rory Atkinson
Approaching the half way point of the season, the class A championship battle is between Atkinson, Waldie Meintjies (LTR / Marty’s Body & Spray Polo) and defending champion James Hurley (The Starter Pack Company Polo). Atkinson has a 22 point lead but, with a maximum of 23 points available at each of the remaining events, this could soon change. Devon Piazza-Musso (Tooling Promotions Polo) had a good outing in Port Elizabeth and will be looking for more of the same so he can challenge the leading trio. Derrick Smalberger (Sabertek / Tyremart Beetle) and Iain Stevenson (Comsol Polo) are also capable of running close to the head of the field on their day.
Gerhard Henning missed the last round in Port Elizabeth and is not on the entry list for this event. This means that Clarke’s closest competition in class B is likely to come from Brad Hall (HellermannTylon Polo), the Stewart brothers in their GrandMark International Polos, and Darren Nathan (Sextrader Polo). Lee Thompson has also submitted an entry and he has the ability to run at the head of the field.
Despite a meagre points haul at Aldo Scribante Zander Roos (Nathan’s Motorsport Polo) still has a comfortable lead in the class C championship. He is 26 points ahead of Shaun Crous (X35 Energy Polo) with Francois van Zyl (Jesus Saves Golf) just a point further back. Henry van Vledder (Golf) is next up. He has Simon Levin (Auto ECU Golf), Elke van Vledder (Golf) and Stuart Mack (Goldwagen JHB CBD & Wynberg Golf) in close attendance.
Qualifying gets underway at 07h30 on Saturday morning with the first of the two 10-lap races schedules to start at 10h40. The lights should go out to signal the start of the second race at 14h10.
