Can Rally learn from Cycling?

The impact of the weekend’s UK start of the Tour de France cycle race has been huge. The images of thousands and thousands of happy spectators in the Yorkshire hills, villages, towns and cities, complete with the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to watch the the bikes go by have gone around the world.Great at for Yorkshire, great for cycling.
Cycling and rallying

Today’s stage finish in the Mall outside Buckingham Palace will no doubt attract similar publicity.

Could rally attract the same enthusiasm, and the same TV coverage?

Might it not be worth asking the ASO, organisers of the Tour, and also organisers of the Dakar Rally, if they could perhaps bring something of this magic to stage rallying?

And to ask Gary Verity, the chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, who brought the Tour Depart to Yorkshire if he could suggest any way that rally could attract the same audiences, and the same media frenzy?

This image by the Liverpool Daily Echo went viral on Twitter.

Imagine those same crowds, safely positioned for motorsport, turning out to watch a rally…
