A packed programme on a beautiful winter’s day kept a large KZN crowd entertained from morning to late afternoon at Dezzi Raceway on Saturday 11 August, in a triple header consisting of the EV Dynamics Inland Championship, Historic Tour and a round of the Extreme Series Motormart VW Challenge.
In the Motul MPC races Keegan Pottas ran out the winner both times in his EV Dynamics Honda CRX. He was followed both times by J.B Breedt in the BMW E36. George Economides took 3rd place in race 1 and Doug Fear did likewise in race. Economides won Class B overall at the wheel of his BMW E328i with Bjorn Gerbert in the FAS Alfa GTV6 2nd and Dirk Lawrence in the JDM Tuning Honda Ballade 3rd. Waldo Swiegers in a Golf Mk1 won Class C first time around, with Giles Darroch in the EV Dynamics Golf Mk1 taking the honours in race 2 ahead of Shane Kroon in a similar machine. Darroch also won Class C for the day with Swiegers runner up, and Kroon third, after a promising albeit tentative debut with his 2l turbo engine.
Franco di Matteo in the Deltec Ford Laser duly won Class D in the first 8 lapper, but Ebrahim Peck in the Geardown Gearbox Repairs Golf Mk1 took the afternoon’s race. Neverheless the popular Italian won overall in Class D for the day, ahead of Peck with Don Mackay (EV Dynamics Golf Mk1) third. Class E belonged to Wayne Pereira in another Golf Mk1, with a brace for the day.
In the LiquiMoly Inex Legends, Devin Robertson easily won won races 1 and 2, but in the championship stakes, Richard Upton was runner up in race 1, with Justin Robertson completing the podium. Gerhard Roux was impressive as runner up in race 2, finishing ahead of Willie Erasmus, who was putting in a guest appearance. Race 3 was a frenetic affair with Devin Robertson working his way through the field only to be spun back down the order and then making an unstoppable comeback to finish runner up to winner Justin Robertson by just .419 secs.
Richard Upton was third. Although not the most competitive event of the season, the action in the Inex Legends was again thrilling, with the appreciative crowd showing their approval of Devin Robertson’s comeback in race 3 with loud applause around the circuit. A legend indeed…
