Botswana will become the latest country to join the Africa Rally Championship as it is set to organise a candidate event next year.The event will be one of the regional championship rounds once the candidate event is approved by the world motorsport governing body, the Federation Internationale De L’automobile(FIA).
Botswana is popular for off-road events.
“Botswana has been a member of CACMs for the last 5 years, so we asked them to try and have a candidate event in order to push start them in rally since they only have off road,” said Muna Singh the Vice Chairperson of CACMs.
Botswana comes in at the time when Kenya withdrew from organising the ARC event this year.
Singh further explains that the addition of Botswana could help to promote the fading ARC.
“We need many countries to join so that the championship can grow and become more competitive,” he said.
Ethiopia is another country expected to join ARC after Botswana.
