Cronje first on the road day Volkwagen Rally

Altogether 34 cars restarted the Volkswagen Rally in Port Elizabeth this morning with the overnight leader Mark Cronje in the Ford Dealer Team Ford Fiesta first on the road.He started the day with a 40.6 lead over the Team Castrol Toyota Yaris of Leeroy Poulter.

The first four stages were shared by Cronje, Weijs and Poulter, but by stage 11 Cronje was still in a strong position in the lead. He had extended his lead over Poulter to 46.2 seconds.

Weisj,in the Sasolracing Volkswagen Polo, started the morning third, but by stage 11 he had been overtaken by Giniel de Villiers in the Imperial Toyota Yaris who was 2:12.3 off Cronje’s pace. Weijs was fourth +2:38.5 followed by fifth placed Henk Lategan in another Sasolracing Volkswagen Polo +3:24.8.

Gugu Zulu, also in a Sasolracing Volkswagen Polo, occupied sixth place, but he was way off the pace on +9:50.2.

Leading Class S1600 was Chad van Beurden in a Volkswagen Polo R2. He was 10:47.0 behind the leader.

The competitors do eight stages today before the event finishes at the Nelson Mandela Satium this afternoon. The rally is the fourt roud of the SA National Championship.
