Dakar 2017 shorts stage 5

  • 13:02 De Villiers is completely lost

Giniel de Villiers is in big trouble. The South African has had to make a total change in direction on the special and is losing rather than gaining time. The Toyota driver is in the process of losing any chances he has in the general standings.

  • 12:49 Despres in difficulty

Opening the road is not easy and especially difficult on such a tricky stage. Cyril Despres has spent plenty of time looking for the correct route and lags behind Loeb by 16’36 at WP3.

  • 12:41 Hirvonen gets lost

Mikko Hirvonen has made his first mistake of the rally and is currently approximately 4 km from the right route. Mini’s leading representative is losing plenty of time.

  • 12:36 Loeb opens up the gaps

The first navigational difficulties of the day have had an effect. Sébastien Loeb overcame them seamlessly and leads Nani Roma by 6’21 at WP3. As for Stéphane Peterhansel, he has had to search for the right track and has lost contact with his team-mate, who he now trails by 7’30.

  • 12:15 Hirvonen not far behind the Peugeots

Since the withdrawal of Nasser Al-Attiyah, Mikko Hirvonen seems to be the main opponent to Peugeot’s domination. The Finn has not made any mistakes and has reached WP2 in third place, 3’28 behind Loeb and Peterhansel.

  • 12:07 The day’s stage is shortened

The day’s stage will now finish at the end of the first portion, after 219 km. The competitors will not start the second portion of the special after the neutralised zone, because the tracks are no longer negotiable due to the poor weather conditions present on the way to Oruro.
