And this is what the brand new one-litre turbocharged Ford Fiesta R2 built by M-Sport looks like: no big surprises in other words.
But underneath the bonnet, there’s a quiet revolution going on. Because this tiny engine is actually more powerful than the 1.6-litre unit it replaces in the outgoing R2.
The car will be used as the basis of this year’s DMACK Fiesta Trophy, with the prize of a full WRC2 campaign in a Fiesta R5 – as won by Sander Parn this year – in place once more for 2016.
Parn has helped to develop the new car, which features a raft of other modifications including revised transmission, brakes, electronics, cooling and suspension.
A wide range of entries has been received from all four corners of the world, including Europe, Peru, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and USA. The son of 1981 World Rally Champion Max Vatanen is also hoping to return to the series this year, having clinched the top rookie prize in 2014.
The championship gets underway on Rally Portugal in May, which is when the revolutionary turbocharged car will make its debut.
