Mexicanos, ponganse estos lentes para que no se les noten los ojos hinchados mañana en la construcción del muro #electionNight pic.twitter.com/CKFluZ1dB7— HAWKERS MX (@HawkersMX) November 9, 2016
Usted no habla Espanol? The tweet essentially suggests that Mexicans can use Hawkers brand sunglasses in order to hide their “crying eyes tomorrow when you are building the wall.”
Subsequent tweets from the Mexican-run account, including a video message, attempted to mollify the outrage that followed, pointing out the tweet was not intended as “mockery”, but more as a self-depracating take on the course of events north of the border and its impact on Mexico.
Whatever the intent, Perez certainly wasn’t laughing.
He hit back with a tweet of his own:
“Really bad comment,” read the tweet. “Today I am breaking my relationship with @HawkersMX.
“I will never let anyone make fun of my country.”
According to motosport.com, Hawkers had only last Wednesday released their first Perez-edition pair of sunglasses. Indeed, “Hawkers x Perez” imagery was still in the header of their Twitter account at the time of writing.
By the sounds of things, they may be a very limited edition.
