Fire risk forces BMW to recall 1 million vehicles

BMW is recalling approximately 1 million vehicles due to a risk of underhood fires. Two separate issues are at the root of the recall: the first, affecting 740,000 vehicles from the 1-, 3– and 5-Series lineup, along with the Z4 and X3 and X5, all from model years 2007-11, involves a rusty crankcase ventilation valve.

The second problem affects 2006-2011 3-Series cars, about 673,000 vehicles, and involves heating and air-conditioning wiring that could overheat, which could cause a fire. Some vehicles are affected by both issues, leading to a total recall of about a million units.

No injuries have been reported regarding the valve issue, but four injuries have resulted from the shorted wiring harness.

Both issues will be addressed by BMW dealers starting Dec. 18.
