Former F1 racer Robert Kubica gets LMP1 ride for Le Mans, WEC

Former BMW and Renault F1 driver Robert Kubica has been slowly working his way back to Formula 1. The 32-year-old former F1 driver has been unable to race in single-seat race cars since a 2011 preseason rally crash left him with a permanent arm injury.Last season, he competed in the World Rally Championship, and after finishing on the podium in the Renault Sport Trophy race at Spa said he hoped to someday compete at Le Mans.

It now appears he will have that chance. Kubica has signed to return full-time in the top prototype category of the World Endurance Championship, including the 2017 Le Mans race with former F1 boss Colin Kolles’ team.

“After my time in rally, I’ve been looking for something as close to Formula 1 as possible,” he said. “This is exactly what I’ve found in LMP1.”

While restrictions in the cockpit due to his arm injury have stopped his return to single-seaters, Kubica has already tested the Le Mans car and says he “felt comfortable.”

Kubica started 76 Formula 1 races between 2006 and 2010.
