Hyundai has been fined €50,000 after Rally Italy after it was discovered that Thierry Neuville’s winning car was fitted with non-homologated rear side windows.The new windows on Neuville’s car were 17g and 19g lighter respectively than the ones used for the homologation of the Hyundai i20 WRC, which was introduced by the team this year.
The issue was uncovered in post-event scrutineering, although Neuville – who secured only his second WRC win in Sardinia – avoided any further penalties, including a potential disqualification.
Hyundai team boss Michel Nandan admitted the team had been using the illegal windows since Rally Monte-Carlo, the opening round of the season.
He explained the team was unable to fit the original ones, which could only fit into the car with the doors unassembled, due a mistake in the homologation process.
