JACO van Dyk and family… Update 15h30 Sat 18 July 2020

UPDATE 15H00 18 July 2020 – Jaco van Dyk and his two daughters Ousus and Ulandi.

Jaco and his eldest daughter Ousus are both still in ICU.

Before I say anything else – the fact that Ousus is still in ICU makes her conduct after the horrific helicopter crash all the more significant – if not incredible.

This young girl kept her cool and phoned in their position, sent out a pin and phoned the control again when the police chopper actually flew over them, to make them turn around as it was difficult to spot the crashed chopper if you did not expect it there.

She walked up a small hill to get a signal to phone.

This may sound like nothing, but I need to tell you that her neck was broken in the crash! I am sure not one of us can start imagining the pain she must have suffered. Ousus you are a true hero – all of us thank you for probably saving your dad’s life in the process.

Ousus will remain in ICU for another while.

Jaco is in stable but very emotional condition and in much pain. He has so many questions but due to the fact that he can hardly speak at the moment – communication is very difficult. The isolation of ICU is also catching him and those closest to him are sure that they will move him out of there as soon as they dare.

Jaco also suffered a broken arm, leg and pelvis.

He apparently damaged the nerves in the hand that held the control severely and could still suffer some more consequences due to that.

He also damaged nerves in one leg that may cause a slight cripple walk – but I am certain he will not be too worried about that. The fact that he has feeling in both legs and arms, is almost first prize under these conditions.

The fracture in his back is a new one, and not where he broke it before. An interesting fact is that the doctor who operated on him after his first break assisted via the internet during the operation in Windhoek. The technology is truly amazing.

The doctors were all satisfied with the outcome as the lengthy and very difficult operation went well.

Jaco was quite emotional when he heard the names of those who send messages and wanted to phone immediately to thank you all. That is, of course, a sign that we will see our friend in some sort of action one of these days again.

The youngest daughter Ulandi is in a normal ward and she is doing well.

Well, guys that is it for now – thank goodness I can write such a report and not one that I feared when the news broke on Thursday.

Keep them all in mind and prayers – you guys did very well so far!

The three van Dyk’s appreciate every single thought, prayer and wish.

More as soon as we get another report.
