SS3 is the longest test of today’s rallying – the 23.24km Moselland stage, which will repeated as SS7 this afternoon. It’s the first of the infamous vineyard visits, being based around the narrow roads used to navigate the vines. Hairpin beds, walls and big drops are only part of the challenge.
 It was Jari-Matti Latvala who conquered the stage to best effect, taking a fast enough time to spring him into the rally lead. His 14:01.1 was some 2.2 seconds faster than previous rally leader Sebastien Ogier, who is now half a second down. ‘Still I did a few mistakes so I’m not completely satisfied.’ explained Jari-Matti. ‘I’m still struggling to find the correct feeling with the braking.’ Andreas Mikkelsen’s consistency continues as he comes through the stage third quickest, followed by Kris Meeke – he completed the stage with a wobbling rear wheel. ‘It happened in a slow junction, second gear, the rear just stepped out and hit a kerb. We don’t know how bad it is until we have a look.’ Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo complete the top six. Up next is the 13.67km Mittelmosel test, which completes the morning’s leg and means that the driver’s can head to service afterwards |
