The scenic Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone, Kwa-Zulu Natal will be the location for the fourth round of the 2016 INEX Legends Championship on Saturday 4 June. This popular series has been included as part of round three of the Historic Tour who will be hosting the event. The Overall and Individual class championships within the INEX Legends Championship have certainly developed into a close run affair with a number of leading contenders all in with a chance.
The Classes
Divan Myburgh heads the points table in the Pro Category with Keagan Wessels well within striking distance. Shaun Nel could very well pull off an upset or two as well as he is mere points behind Wessels. Seef Fourie and Morne Stoltz have some work to do but are certainly capable of scoring valuable podium points. With a bit of luck and reliability Llewellyn Myburgh could very well steal a podium spot as well.
Things are even closer in the Semi-Pro category with Lonika Maartens ahead of Shjaell Nel. Dawie Fourie is only twenty points behind Nel with Anro Stadler a bit further behind him. Series newcomer Richard Upton took valuable points at the previous round and could very well upset some of the favourites. It is hoped that Janeske Botha and Jordan Larsson will be back in action as well.
Just because the Masters class consists of older drivers doesn’t mean that the action is any less spectacular. Justin Robertson and Anton Repsold are the leading contenders in the class, but Steve Nel and Fred Els are well within striking distance of the class leaders as well. Johan Jooste, Johnny De Carvalho and Johan van de Venter are a bit further behind but are all capable of stealing points away from the leading pack.
Clinton Bezuidenhout has dominated the Young Lions class and has been an overall contender on a number of occasions but unfortunately he won’t be participating at this event as he will be racing elsewhere in the national Polo Cup series. However this does open the door for young Altan Bouw to showcase the talent that he displayed at the previous round, more importantly it will allow him to close the point’s gap on Bezuidenhout too.
The Overall title chase
Besides the individual class titles that are up for grabs, the coveted Overall INEX Legends Championship title is very much on the minds of a number of leading drivers. Proving just how evenly matched the drivers in the individual classes are, the current top eight positions are represented by each of the four classes in the series.
Divan Myburgh (Pro) has built up a decent lead at the top of the points table but a bad result at any of the remaining events could dramatically change that for him. Keagan Wessels (Pro) finds himself in second position but is only twenty points ahead of Justin Robertson (Master). Shaun Nel (Pro) is not too far behind the leading trio and will be relieved that fifth placed Clinton Bezuidenhout (Young Lion) will not gain any points on him at this round. Team mates Anton Repsold (Master), Lonika Maartens (Semi-Pro) and Seef Fourie (Pro) will all be hoping to close the gap on Bezuidenhout and the rest of the front runners as well.
