Michael Schumacher’s health status remains at the centre of public curiosity in 2020, seven years after the Formula One hero was injured in a skiing accident. Fans are still clamouring for regular updates about his health, as he remains on the path of recovery following years of treatment for a severe brain injury. Doctors have revealed how the ex-driver is likely fairing in treatment.
Michael Schumacher’s recovery from his 2013 accident remains mostly shrouded in mystery.
He regained consciousness after doctors put him in a medically induced coma in June 2014, and they transferred him to a hospital for rehab.
They allowed him to return home in September the same year, and he has continued to receive treatment.
His wife Corinna and their management continue to protect his privacy, and recent reports he was to undergo stem cell surgery may have proved false.
The driver would have needed the treatment to cure a selection of health complications.
Rumours suggest his years in bed have led him to develop muscle atrophy and osteoporosis.
Fans hoped the surgery, conducted by French cardiologist Dr Philippe Menasche, would work to replace the damaged parts of his brain and regenerate his nervous system.
Dr Menasche had previously found success grafting healthy stem cells onto a damaged heart.
Health professionals believe the surgery is safe, but there is no indication as to how effective it would be.
Other leading health professionals have also revealed details about Mr Schumacher’s condition.
Speaking to Contro Copertina Italian neurosurgeon Nicola Acciari said the brain trauma Mr Schumacher has suffered will leave him “very altered”.
She said: “We must imagine a person very different from the one we remember on the track, with a very altered and deteriorated organic, muscular and skeletal structure.
“All as a result of the brain trauma he suffered.”
He said earlier this year: “I’m always careful with such statements, but it’s true. I saw the race together with Michael Schumacher at his home in Switzerland.
“Michael is in the best hands and is well looked after in his house. He does not give up and keeps fighting.
“His family is fighting just as much and of course our friendship cannot be the same as it once was just because there’s no longer the same communication as before.”
