Anthony O’Brien and Josh Wittman were taken to a local hospital after both were engulfed in flames Friday night during the Toyota Care 250 at Richmond International Raceway.
A third crew member, Clifford Turner, of Eric McClure’s team also received treatment.
During the second caution on Lap 1111, Brendan Gaughan entered the pits for a routine stop. Wittman fueled the car while O’Brien, from Cambridge, Minn., was changing the rear tire on the No. 62 South Point Chevy when the fire ignited.
Track safety personnel quickly extinguished the fire.
Gaughan was running in the top 20 when the race resumed. Jeremy West filled in for O’Brien for the remainder of the race. Thomas Costello relieved Wittman.
Crew chief Shane Wilson told TV that there was a ‘malfunction in the gas head,’ causing the inferno.
