Phakisa next for VW Challenge

At least 30 vehicles should line up on the grid when the third round of the 2015 VW Challenge gets underway at Phakisa Freeway outside Welkom on Saturday, 2 May. Nic Clarke (Central Technical Services Polo) heads the overall championship log from Gerhard Henning (Goldwagen Roodepoort Polo) and Zander Roos (Nathan’s Motorsport Polo). With the three of them separated by just four points, the top of the log could look very different by the time they leave the Free State.

In class A the battle is likely to be between Rory Atkinson (Comsol Polo) and James Hurley (The Starter Pack Company Polo) as it has been for the past year. Mechanical gremlins and the odd penalty have left Hurley nine points behind Atkinson and he will be looking for a trouble free weekend to close the gap. Derrick Smalberger (Sabertek / Tyremart Beetle) is just a point behind Hurley but he is not making the trip to Welkom which should allow Louis Robbertse (Soulpro Polo), Iain Stevenson (Comsol Polo) and Waldie Meintjies (Performance Masters / Marty’s Body & Spray Polo) to move up the log.

Overall championship leader Clarke tops the class B log, just two points ahead of Henning. The pair have a comfortable lead over the chasing pack which is led by Brad Hall (Piazza Motorsport Polo). He has Andre Needham (Technicon Auto Spares Polo) hot on his heels with Daine Stewart (GrandMark International Polo) and Andre Calitz (AC Honed Group Polo) also in close attendance.

Zander Roos heads the class C race from Henry van Vledder (Golf) who got his season back on track with two wins last time out at Zwartkops. Shaun Crous (X35 Energy Polo) is just a point behind van Vledder in third. A close battle between the Golf I brigade of Simon Levin, Elke van Vledder and Sam Dale, who are separated by just three points, rounds out the top six in class C.

Qualifying gets underway bright and early on the Saturday morning, the cars will go out for their 15 minute session at 07h00. The first of the two 8- lap races is scheduled for 09h20 while the lights should go out to signal the start of the second race at 12h35. Entrance to the circuit is free of charge.
