Seven car finish on Volkswagen Rally

The Toyota Yaris Gazoo Racing crew of Leeroy Poulter and Elvene Coetsee, won their fourth consecutive national rally and find themselves in a near unbeatable position on the SA Rally Championship Log for the 2016 title. They won the 34th Volkswagen Rally in a time of 1:56:46.3 and beat their teammate Giniel de Villiers in a similar car by 1:51.8.

Guy Botterill in a Yato Toyota Etios R2 scored another podium position for Toyota after Ernie van der Walt in a Toyota Yaris fell out of the rally. Van der Walt was third for most of the event before he had his second accident.

With his demise the number of cars that finished was seven of which only two were S2000 cars after Luke Botha withdrew with mechanical problems on his Ford Fiesta earlier on.

Botterill finished 12:39.8 behind Poulter and in fourth was AC Potgieter in a Volkswagen Polo R2 +15:09.9. Fifth overall was Richard Leeke in a Ford Fiesta R2 +18:12.7, followed by Chris Coertse in a Toyota Etios R2 +19:15.5.

Paulus Franken who re-entered the rally this morning under Super Rally Rules brought up the rear +32:56.2.

The Volkswagen Rally was the fourth round of the seven round SA National Rally Championship. The next event will be held in  Heidelberg in August.
