It was Ott Tanak that proved himself quickest, taking the stage win. The M-Sport driver has been further down the runnings so far this rally, so has found some new pace this afternoon on what was a tricky but enjoyable stage. His time of 7:48.6 was some 2.1 seconds faster than rally leader Hayden Paddon. ‘This one was actually quite okay.’ Ott added. ‘I have to be confident if I want to go fast and I felt good in here. I am happy with my driving.’

Paddon’s second place increases his rally lead over Latvala by 1.2 seconds, while Ogier’s third place ahead of Jari Matti in fourth means that he’s closed down on his team mate by 0.7 seconds. Mads Ostberg was fifth quickest and clearly enjoyed himself. ‘I loved driving that stage – for me it was the best so far. I had a smile on my face all the way through. If I could drive it again I would!’ he smiled.

Neuville rounds out the top six, and as the crews now head towards SS8, there have been reports of Ogier complaining of a clutch issue out on the road section. This could spell disaster for the Frenchman, although his pace in the stage doesn’t suggest any problem.

SS8 is the 22.5km Grighine Sud 2 stage, a repeat of SS2, and begins at 17:23 local time.
