The Mini Countryman Gets the Inevitable John Cooper Works Treatment

Back in October, Mini introduced the redesigned, larger Countryman. The added size gave it a bit more cargo room, bringing it in line with other subcompact CUVs. If you’re looking for that utility with a little more sporting flair, now there’s a John Cooper Works version of the Countryman. High-performance cute-ute? Overgrown hot-hatch? We’re not sure exactly how to categorize this one.

The biggest change is, of course, under the hood. In JCW form, the Countryman gets the same engine that comes with every other JCW-badged Mini, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 228 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Sent to all four wheels via standard all-wheel drive, that’s enough power to scoot the Countryman to 60 mph in a claimed 6.2 seconds, nearly a second quicker than the Countryman S and way quicker than the base car.

In addition to a more-powerful engine, JCW buyers also get a sport-tuned suspension, Brembo brakes, upgraded seats, and 18-inch wheels. The package also comes with a rally-inspired aero kit to help keep the car planted on the way to its (somewhat unexpected) top speed of 145 mph.

Look for Mini to officially unveil the John Cooper Works Countryman at the Shanghai Motor Show this April. If you like what you see, you won’t have to wait long to buy one
