Volkswagen Sasolracing Ready for 2015 Season of National Rally Competition

The Volkswagen Sasolracing team is primed for the 2015 national rally championship which starts in KwaZulu-Natal at the end of February. The eight round season will see the team competing in a variety of conditions, from sugar cane fields to mielie fields, forests and farmlands in several provinces around the country.

“The Volkswagen Sasolracing team grew in stature and confidence last year,” says Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “With Hans and Björn clinching second spot for us in the 2014 national championship, we believe we are well set for a great season in 2015 – which includes one change in the team line-up.”

The Volkswagen Sasolracing lineup for 2015 will see Hans Weijs Jnr and Björn Degandt rallying alongside Henk Lategan and Barry White with Gugu Zulu and Pierre Arries rounding out the three-car team.

Pierre Arries resumes his duty this year, navigating alongside Gugu Zulu. Zulu’s long-time navigator and multiple national championship winner, Carl Peskin, has made it known that business pressures have forced his decision this season.

“Carl has been a great asset to the team and also to Gugu’s growth as a national rally driver,” says Rowe. “We are sad to lose him as an active team member in 2015.”

Peskin’s work responsibilities have put pressure on the time available to pursue his rally passion, making it difficult to keep up with a hectic national rally schedule – and the responsibilities that go with it.

“Competing with the Volkswagen team for eight years and winning three national titles with Gugu has been a tremendous experience,” says Peskin. “Right now I have to focus on my career as an investment banker, so the rallying has to take a back seat for a while. I wish Gugu and Pierre every success this season.”
