Baragwanath, who won the third special stage, was 10th overall with Twigge, who brought a damaged quad home after Stage 7 after a high-speed crash, three places behind him and Barbier 30th.
Heavy rains, a sandstorm, extreme heat in Argentina and zero temperatures at altitude in Bolivia have made life uncomfortable for competitors and service crews.
Baragwanath made a strong start to the event with second place on stage two followed by his stage three victory. But since then has had his ups and downs with punctures and mechanical issues, and has slipped 81 minutes behind race leader Alejandro Patronelli.
Yamaha and Argentinian riders have a tight hold on the top five quad places with Patronelli leading his brother, Marcos, by three minutes 36 seconds. Russian Sergei Karyakin is third with Argentinians Jeremias Gonzalez and Alexis Hernandez fourth and fifth.
On the motorcycle front Portuguese rider Paolo Goncalves (Honda) leads Australian Toby Price, on a KTM, by just over three minutes. Price is followed by Slovakian Stefan Svitko (KTM), Chilean Pablo Quiptanill (Husqvarna) and Argentinian Kevin Benavista on another Honda.
South African Kobus Potgieter, on a KTM, who will turn 50 in June, was among those still running at the halfway stage of the event. Potgieter was lying 100th but there was a painful end to the event for Lesotho rider Wessel Bosman who was forced to retire after an accident in stage six.
The incident left Bosman with a broken left wrist, broken bones in both hands and a chipped elbow. The race restarts tomorrow with competitors heading for daunting sand dune sections before the event finishes in Rosario, in Argentina, next Sunday.
